If You Have the Winter Blues, This One’s for You

Fall rolls around and there are changing leaves, pumpkins, and excitement in the air. The change of season feels great… until it gets cold and dark outside.

While many people enjoy the cold weather, others suffer from seasonal depression, otherwise known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). According to HelpGuide, “SAD affects about 1-2% of the population, particularly women and young people, while a milder form of winter blues may affect as many as 10-20% of people”.

The good news is that SAD is very treatable, and we’ve outlined some tips on how to manage it:

Get Sunlight:

Go outside whenever you can during the day. You can also speak to your doctor about trying light therapy or Vitamin D supplementation, as these have been proven to be effective in treating SAD as well.

Take Care of Your Physical Body:

It’s extremely important to take care of your body’s basic needs, which include exercise, nutrition, hydration, and sleep. These four things directly affect how you feel.

Self-Care Activities:

Ask yourself, “What do I need right now?” and listen to both your mental and physical body. Self-care looks different for everyone, so choose what’s best for you in the moment.

Talk to Someone:

Talking to someone about how we feel or simply just enjoying the company of a loved one can make a huge impact on our mental health. Never underestimate the power of human connection.

If you’re consistently feeling serious feelings of depression, we encourage you to seek professional help. You may need some form of treatment outside of the ones we’ve shared above. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us and we’ll guide you through finding a solution that works best for you.

Remember that it’s normal to feel a bit down during the colder seasons, so treat yourself with love and patience. A new season is just around the corner!
